HAGAVATN LAKE
Why is Hagavatn lake not so popular (and what are people missing)? Hagavatn lake is not as popular as Gulfoss Waterfall or the Golden Circle because not everyone knows about this place. The road is open only during the summer season and without 4x4 car, you will not be able to get there. On your way to Hagavatn lake, you will have to cross two small rivers, drive on unpaved roads on most places full of rocks. Access is not easy but when you will get to the end you will be amazed. Even in the middle of the summer season, you will meet only a few cars a just a few people. The drive takes about 60 minutes from Gullfoss Waterfall one way. On your way, you will see green parts, moonland, lakes and spectacular mountains on the horizon. When you will cross the second small river you are almost there. From the place where you park your car this place doesn't look much different compared with the rest of Iceland (a few mountains around accompanied by a lazy river) but that's just a beginning. If you will take a few steps against the river stream you will explore the Nyifoss waterfall (the youngest waterfall in Iceland, Nyi = new, Foss = waterfall) where you can get really close to it if you keep going against the river stream and you will end up in a little canyon. If you will step back from the canyon and will follow the path leading uphill there is the reason why Hagavatn lake should not miss on your bucket list.
After a few minutes you will find yourself above the Nyifoss waterfall with stunning mountains views, river and the whole valley. From this point it's just a few more steps towards the top where behind the Nyifoss waterfall is Hagavatn lake. If you have a mood like to build a snowman in the middle of summer you CAN! At the edge of the lake is situated edge of the glacier. The combination of all of these wonders is just unforgettable.
