Why did I move to Vancouver?

Updated: Aug 19, 2020

No matter where I was living I always came across to someone who had an opportunity to live in Canada. The convesration always ended the same way. You have to go to Canada and It was the best year of my life. I was a bit sceptical at the beginning but more people with canadian experience I met more was growing my curiosity. Most of them mentioned a life time adventure, breathtaking nature, unforgettable hikes, smiling people, friendly and polite culture. I couldn't resist any more. I had to apply for a working holiday visa for 1 year.

Why did I choose Vancouver

I was certain I don't want to live in the east part of Canada as I don't speak French. Several people recommended me Toronto but more of them were trying to convince me to go to Vancouver. When they supported their recommendation by mountains, hiking, nature, city life, beaches and more I was convinced. Vancouver was the winner. It was also a nice change (after the Iceland where I was living in the middle of nowhere) to live in the city where all around you are people and buildings for a change.

What did I know about Canada?

You could be surprised how little I knew about Canada before I landed in Vancouver besides seeing hundreds of photos. All I knew about Canada was based on information provided in TV Show How I Met Your Mother. Yes. That was all. When I was asking my canadian friends whether they are afraid of dark they couldn't figure out where did I get such a random question :) (If you are curious those who come from Vancouver are not afraid of dark)

Was it as advertised?

What was described by many travellers I personally met wasn't getting even close to the real life in Vancouver. You can meet smiling and friendly people on every corner. The weather is just amazing, sunny with breathtaking sunsets. The local culture is welcoming and filled with various markets and festivals. Several beaches are available for you to enjoy the summer or just a lovely walk. Not far away is pure nature full of mountains, deep forests, various lakes and unforgettable hikes. Pleasant restaurants, bars and cafes with a wonderful atmospehere acompanied by an excellent service and delicious cuisine. To miss the walk around the Stanley Park or the brunch with mimosa/ceasar would be almost a sin.

The best year of my life

The decision to live in Canada was the best one I have ever made. The only one negative thing about Canada is that it's not easy to leave. The moment you will cross the borders you will miss Canada. It will stay in your heart and leave a little maple leaf there as it did to me :)
